Budget Impact:
- For the lodging industry, energy conservation is a well-recognized element in lowering costs. On average, America's 47,000 hotels spend $2,196 per available room each year on energy, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This represents about six percent of all operating costs.
- Hotels represent more than 5 billion square feet of space, nearly 5 million guest rooms, and close to $4 billion in annual energy use.
- Energy is typically the second or third largest cost for the average hotel, therefore, owners have a vested interest in reducing overall usage and driving greater efficiencies.
